little man is sick
Quinn's got a case of Croup. He kept us up till 4am on Thursday night. Every time he coughed he winced in pain and cried. I assume croup can be painful to the throat. Friday at the doctors it was confirmed. Like a cold there is nothing we can do but wait it out... He's not sleeping much and naps seem to be out of the question.
Two other things popped up at the doctors office, I spoke to the nurse about his aversion to any cold medicine and how it's not effective if he spits it out or throws it up. She handed me a sample Triaminic cold strip. Just like those breathe strips, it dissolves on your tongue. Quinn was very much in favor of these tasty little treats, but I wonder how they pack all that medicine in those tiny little strips that are the size of my thumb nail?
The other thing that popped up, which is slightly disturbing is that his last ear tube has fallen out. When the doctor was looking for it she noticed that the hole that held the tube has gotten larger rather then smaller. She suggested we go to our specialist as soon as possible but also mentioned that by the time we see him the hole may close on it's own. Still I saw and heard a bit of concern in her voice and that worries me. Doctors try so hard to pad things softly to parents that sometimes you miss the dangers. That happened when Quinn was three weeks old. Quinn had distention in his belly and the doctor very sweetly said that we should take him for abdominal x-rays... she was so soft and kind about it that Tony and I walked out with smiles and no worries. Later that day she called and asked where the x-rays were. We said that we had an appointment the following day. That's when the fear and warning came out of her. She was very upset and told us that we should have told the radiologist that it was an emergency and finally explained the danger he might be in. Because of that day I try to read between the lines with doctors and I'm troubled about his ears now. Tony has a friend who has partial hearing loss because the hole in her ear never closed.

Don't read between the lines - you can never read right - believe me - I've tried.... If it was serious they would tell you to go to the hospital - It's probably just something that needs to be followed up on in a timely fashion... Sorry about the croup - Aren't children exciting? - never a dull moment....who needs sleep anyway? Highly overrated.... :~)
You're right but I panick. We'll see what the specialist says.
I love sleep.. it's so relaxing.
mom's dad is partially deaf in one ear. i don't know why though. and i had crazy ear problems when i was little. i remember the pain and it was pretty terrible. go get that checked asap.
My Dad had scarlet fever or some such that took his hearing - it wasn't from an infection....
fortunatly there is no infection in his ear right now, so no pain ... but with a big hole there it's bound to get infected soon. So I will go as soon as I can get the appointment. That doctor always has a long wait though, the regular doctor said to just explain what's going on and he'll probably squeeze us in sooner.
See - I still think if it was really an EMERGENCY - she would have made the appointment for you or referred you to the hospital - Unfortunately though, almost everything is potentially serious with kids - ya can't win sometimes - it's so hard to determine what symptoms need to be watched and which are just normal childhood ailments....
you could always call nicole. i have her new number. this new little one of hers, ava, has ear problems too.
ava looks just like dan - it's ridiculous. and anna looks just like pictures of nicole when she was little.
It turns out his ear tube is still in... the other doctor was wrong.
